    The annual report by the Social Mobility Commission analyses social mobility through the prism of the Social Mobility Index. Using 16 indicators, the index assesses the education, employability and housing prospects of people living in each of England’s 324 local authority areas. The index highlights where people from disadvantaged backgrounds are most and least likely to make social progress.

  • regeneration project in Scotland (Vineburgh, Irvine North Ayrshire)

    Year of publication: 2012

    This research was conducted on behalf of Cunninghame Housing Association to examine the economic, social and environmental impact of housing and regeneration activity on the Vineburgh estate in North Ayrshire. SROI is a method developed to measure the social and environmental impact of activities and put a monetary value on them (although most have no tradeable value).

  • Good design: the fundamentals

    This essay focuses on the importance of good design. Simmons believes people must be at the heart of strategy for the built environment. Places which delight tend to be valued and cared for - those which do not tend to cost more in crime, high maintenance, poor health and social exclusion.

  • Creating Strong Communities: How to Measure the Social Sustainability of New Housing Developments

    Social sustainability describes the extent to which a neighbourhood supports individual and collective well-being. This report attempts to create a framework by which to measure social sustainability, with a focus on the design of new residential developments. Four case studies are included, all developments by the Berkeley Group, who commissioned the work. Affordable housing formed 30%-50% of the homes in the case study developments.
