Ten case studies of local authorities using art and culture to deliver positive outcomes in their area, such as changes in education, wellbeing, economic growth and community cohesion in their area. The publication draws together best practice to help decision makers better understand their role in championing placemaking.

The case studies are broadly categorised as:

  • learning, engagement and belonging
  • economic growth and regeneration
  • stronger communities
  • cultural planning, strategy and infrastructure
  • local talent development

The report identified the following as success factors when placemaking:

  • effective community engagement at every stage
  • strong partnerships
  • a project steering group with representatives from key organisations and target audiences
  • engendering pride and interest in a place
  • attracting investment into the cultural sector
  • bringing people together for cultural experiences as a way of achieving other outcomes
  • ensuring there are champions for a project within the local council
  • using success to unlock further funding opportunities and form new partnerships
