The publication draws together best practice to help decision makers better understand their role in championing placemaking.
The case studies are broadly categorised as:

- stronger communities
- cultural planning, strategy and infrastructure
- local talent development
The report identified the following as success factors when placemaking:
- effective community engagement at every stage
- strong partnerships
- a project steering group with representatives from key organisations and target audiences
- engendering pride and interest in a place
- attracting investment into the cultural sector
- bringing people together for cultural experiences as a way of achieving other outcomes
- ensuring there are champions for a project within the local council
- using success to unlock further funding opportunities and form new partnerships
