House of Lords Select Committee on National Policy for the Built Environment

Year of publication: 2016

This report was produced by The Select Committee on National Policy for the Built Environment which was appointed by the House of Lords on 11 June 2015 “to consider the development and implementation of national policy for the built environment”.

The report focuses on:

  • The built environment: recent trends and emerging challenges
  • Creating better places: design, quality and standards
  • Building for the long-term: sustainability and resilience
  • Delivering more housing
  • Local leadership, delivery and skills

The Committee conclude that the focus on driving up supply of housing appears to threaten placemaking. They determine that increased housing supply should not come at the expense of consideration of other parts of the built environment, sustainable planning for the long term and delivery of high quality and design standards. They set out a number of recommendations to Government to achieve this.
