Year of publication: 2016

The report of the Commission for Housing in the North examines the differences between the housing markets in the North of England and the South East, seeking to identify its unique challenges and find solutions that can address these.

It finds advantages to the state of Northern housing, including a variety of markets, attractive stock, inward investment and a plentiful supply of land. However, it also identifies issues, such as concern over quality, unpopularity of certain areas, and low values even in prosperous areas.

Drawing on 12 months of evidence-gathering (from, among others, housing associations, businesses, local authorities and academics), the Commissioners identified three priorities to deliver a “modernised framework for housing investment that has place, growth and reform at its heart”. These priorities are: allowing funding flexibility to take local need into account; developing new partnerships, skills and capacity; and revitalising places in a holistic fashion.
